Freelancer Development Fund

Screen sector freelancers based in Wales can now apply for financial assistance to access training opportunities relevant to personal career development.

The Media Cymru Skills and Training project, delivered by University of South Wales, is offering up to a total of £1,500 per person to cover for loss-of-earnings while undertaking training.

Working in partnership with Welsh Government’s Flexible Skills Programme, it may also be possible to cover a portion of the training costs (subject to assessment by Welsh Government).

A. Who can apply?

  • This is an open call for Wales-based screen sector freelancers.
  • Applicants must be registered as sole traders or limited companies.
  • Applicants must be based, or provide evidence of working in the screen sector, in Wales.

B. What do I need to do to apply?

  • You must source the training opportunity and make a case for the relevance of your selected training. (The training duration should be between one day and six months.)
  • You will need to provide CVs, and/or recent credits to demonstrate your industry experience, and previous day rate. We are more likely to support experienced freelancers, and expect to see three or more credits.
  • You will need to provide the details of the training course, including dates, duration, location, cost and training provider.
  • Applications must be submitted at least 25 working days before training is due to commence. Please note that we cannot support training that has already commenced.
  • You will need to provide proof of attendance and completion of your selected training, as well as details of your training provider.

C. How does it work?

  • Funding is limited and will operate on a first-come-first-served basis, subject to assessment.
  • Maximum support available from Media Cymru is £1,500 per person.
  • You will need to provide proof of attendance, completion and payment for your selected training.
  • Freelancer Development Fund payments can only be made once we have received all required compliance evidence.
  • If successful, you are not permitted to reapply for future rounds of support.

In applying for the Freelancer Development Fund, you consent to taking part in Media Cymru’s ongoing Freelance Focus research project.
